Locked Out of iPad – How to Reset the Device Without a Password

If you are like everyone else, then you likely have to remember many different passwords from your bank account password to your email password and everything in between. It can be difficult to recall all of these passwords all the time.

When you cannot remember your iPad password, you may instantly panic as you may think that you are locked out of the device for good. Fortunately, this is not the case. In fact, while you are unlikely to be able to “break into” the tablet, you have the opportunity to enter recovery mode and then reset the device back to its original state.

Below, we will go over some of the different ways that you can get back into your iPad to reset it once you have forgotten the password.

Locked iPad WITHOUT a Home Button

  • Connect your iPad to your computer using your Lightning cable
  • Once connected, press and hold down the top button and one of the volume buttons at the same time until you see a slider pop up on the screen
  • Use your finger and move the slider to power off the device
  • Now, press and hold down the button on top of the device until you see the recovery screen appear
  • Click on the Restore option to reset the device
  • Make sure to follow all prompts on the screen

Locked iPad WITH a Home Button

  • Press down on the top button located at the top of your device and continue to hold it down until you see a slider pop up on the screen (your iPad should NOT be connected to your computer at this point in time)
  • Use your finger and slide the slider to turn the device off
  • Press and hold down the home button while you plug a lightning charger into your computer and device (this must be done at the same time)
  • Click the Restore option when it appears on the screen
  • Follow all prompts to reset your device

Reset Your iPad with Find My iPad

  • Head to www.icloud.com/find and log in using your credentials
  • Click on the all devices button and then select your iPad from the list
  • Click on the erase iPad button and follow the prompts that appear on the screen

Please note that this option will ONLY work if you had find my iPad activated AND you know your username and password.
